Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Apollo 11 during Moon Month at the Milwaukee Public Museum
MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (June 27, 2019) — Make some history of your own this summer and attend MPM’s special programming to commemorate the first humans landing on the moon during July.
Apollo 11 Stargazing Planetarium Program
What: Experience the historic Moonwalk with the Planetarium's short film, A 50th Anniversary Tribute to Apollo 11. After exploring the Moon, it's time for stargazing under a clear Wisconsin night sky! This live tour will show you where to look for planets, constellations and many more heavenly sights.
When: Every day in July*, times vary
Cost: One Planetarium program is included with admission to MPM’s permanent exhibits
Kohl’s Thank You Thursday Moves to July 11*
What: All visitors will receive free admission to MPM’s permanent exhibits when Kohl’s Thank You Thursday moves to July 11 this month. During July only, visitors will also get to see NASA artifacts like parts from the Apollo 8 navigation system that allowed astronauts to be brought safely to the Moon and back to Earth for the first time.
When: Thursday, July 11
Cost: FREE, thanks to our partnership with Kohl’s Cares
Lunar Film Festival
What: Celebrate NASA’s greatest accomplishments with a space adventure at the Lunar Film Festival. All shows include a showing of the Apollo 11 Stargazing program.
When: Hidden Figures (2016) rated PG - Thursday, July 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Apollo 13 (1995) rated PG - Friday, July 19 at 6:30 p.m.
WALL-E (2008) rated G - Saturday, July 20 at 4:00 p.m
First Man (2018) rated PG-13 - Saturday, July 20 at 6:30 p.m.
Cost: Tickets are $6 per person, $4 for members and children 0-3
Moon Day
What: Commemorate the day we landed on the Moon with celestial out-and-indoor demonstrations and activities for all ages such as:
- Using a professional telescope with special filters to view the Sun
- Launching balloon rocket in MPM’s courtyard
- Making a paper rocket with Milwaukee Public Television
- Talk to our experts about this momentous event and seeing NASA artifacts, photos and news clippings rarely displayed at MPM before
When: 11 a.m to 3 p.m.
Cost: FREE (does not include admission to MPM’s permanent exhibits or Dome Theater and Planetarium
Apollo SPARK!
What: People in the early to mid-stages of memory loss, with their family, care partners or group facility, are invited to attend our special presentation by MPM’s Planetarium Director Bob Bonadurer about the Apollo 11 voyage and view unique NASA objects from our collections.
When: Sunday, July 21 at 1 p.m.
