MILWAUKEE COUNTY PAVES THE WAY FOR MUSEUM RE-ACCREDITATION, SUPPORTS NEW MUSEUM PROJECT
MPM grateful for $45 million in bonded funds to support new museum project
MILWAUKEE — The following statement was issued today by Milwaukee Public Museum President & CEO Dr. Ellen Censky:
We are grateful for support from Milwaukee County, in the form of $45 million in bonded funding, which will help ensure that its collections will be preserved long into the future and that this institution can continue to educate, influence and delight our community for generations to come.
In particular, we want to thank County Executive David Crowley, County Board Chairwoman Marcelia Nicholson and Supervisors Jason Haas and Sheldon Wasserman for their recognition of the importance of the Milwaukee Public Museum to our community and their leadership on this matter.
For nearly 60 years, Milwaukee Public Museum and Milwaukee County have partnered to preserve and make accessible the more than four million priceless objects and specimens owned by the County and entrusted to the care of MPM, Inc - a partnership strengthened by today’s commitment.
MPM serves visitors from every county in Wisconsin and almost every state in the country, providing access to local natural history, global cultures and ongoing scientific research that inspires visitors to learn more about the world around us and the people within it. This $45 million funding pledge from Milwaukee County builds upon the $40 million in support pledged by the State of Wisconsin, cementing that this new Museum project will indeed be a public-private partnership and setting the stage for a future $150 million private fundraising campaign.
The next evolution of the Museum will build on our history of presenting ideas and information to our visitors in innovative ways by doing so in a new, world-class building.
About the Milwaukee Public Museum
The Milwaukee Public Museum is a natural and human history museum located in downtown Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Museum was chartered in 1882 and opened to the public in 1884. MPM has three floors of exhibits that encompass life-size dioramas, walk-through villages, world cultures, dinosaurs, a rainforest, and a live butterfly garden as well as the Daniel M. Soref Dome Theater & Planetarium. The Museum houses more than 4 million objects and hosts some half a million visitors each year.
MPM is operated by Milwaukee Public Museum, Inc., a private, non-profit company, and its facilities and collections are held in trust and supported by Milwaukee County for the benefit of the public.
